Château de Digoine is located in the countryside between Autun and the Parc Naturel Régional du Morvan and the city of Beaune, well known for its wine. This is a varied landscape, with woods, hills, streams, lakes and castles. The region of Burgundy with its rich history and culture has a lot to offer and is an ideal base to spend an active or relaxing holiday in a less discovered part of France.
Cyclists will enjoy the many country lanes and hikers the footpaths for either a short walk or serious ´grandes randonnees´.
There are plenty of restaurants in the immediate vicinity and we can certainly give suggestions.
The nearby towns and villages (some renowned for their wines) are very much worth a visit.
- Beaune (30 km) where the famous Hotel-Dieu is located, also offers the Musée de Vin de Bourgogne and Notre Dame. In the city centre there are several restaurants and boutiques. There are many places in and around Beaune to enjoy some superior wine sampling.
- Autun (19 km) is also a nice place to visit and houses the Theatre Romain (at one time 15,000 people could be seated), the Cathedrale Saint-Lazare and the Musée Rolin.
- Nolay (12 km) is a lovely village with quite a few bric-a-brac shops, a pleasant square and a market hall with a stone roof.
On the way to the Château de Digoine one passes through the famous vineyards of the Côte de Beaune, Côte de Nuits and the Chalonnais. It is well worth a trip to visit the renowned and lesser-known vineyards to try some of their exquisite wines. The ´route des Grand vins´ to the chateaux and the caves is well marked on the tourist maps.
In addition one can visit the country markets in Beaune, Autun, Chagny and Chalon sur Saône and experience the local delicacies. For ´brocante´ and antique lovers there are many attic sales (vide greniers) and flea markets (puces).
For sports lovers there are various possibilities. Activities include five golf courses, an open-air swimming pool and playground, water sports, cycling, climbing and of course hiking.
In a nutshell, it´s an area to unwind and spend the perfect holiday.
